OVERVIEW
The Australian Institute for Nanoscience Building is located behind the heritage listed school of physics building on the main University of Sydney campus.
Mainland Civil was contracted direct by the University to undertake the early works including clearing, shoring and excavation of the building basement and relocation of a Sydney Water asset within the new buildings footprint.
Due to the precision of academic research equipment being used, the building had to have no structural connection to the shoring which required permanent anchors to be installed. As the permanent anchor cables passed into the neighbouring property the exact locations were required to be documented. The location of the anchor holes were determined and plotted using a unique down the hole survey called gyroscopic directional drilling.
