OVERVIEW
A new bus depot for Brisbane’s inner-south-west was part of Council’s integrated transport plan to tackle traffic congestion and offer more reliable public transport options for Brisbane residents. The purpose-built facility is expected to accommodate some 708 bus movements per day once fully operational, with the resources onsite to ensure the buses are kept clean, fuelled and well-maintained at all times.
The upper soil layer of the 47,000m2 site was generally uncontrolled fill, which required High-Energy Impact Compaction (HEIC) to reduce the effects of long-term settlement of the site.
The project originally required the cut-to-fill of 25,000m3 of material, and the import of 41,000m3 of select fill. Inundation of the site by the adjacent Oxley Creek during the January 2011 floods prompted a revision of design levels, resulting in a total of 125,000m3 of material imported, placed and compacted under Level 1 Geotechnical supervision.
Approximately 500m2 of Crib Walls up to 3.6m in height were constructed to retain earth adjacent to neighbouring properties.
The facility was designed to meet a four-star rating under the Green Building Council of Australia. Some 15,000T of concrete was diverted from landfill and used as a base course for the 47,000m2 of rigid pavement in lieu of quarried products.
